Golf Tournament Raises Over $5,000
"And a good time was had by all" is an accurate way to describe the eighth Pamlico Community College Foundation Golf Tournament, but there were many more accomplishments noted according to Barbara Venturi, Foundation president. Recently held at Minnesott Golf and Country Club, the tournament produced a very significant thrill. One golfer came within two feet of sinking a hole-in-one and winning $25,000.
According to Venturi, "More than $5,000 was raised for scholarships and student grants. The windy day did not deter golfers from all across this region, New Bern, Greenville, Rocky Mount, Havelock, and Pamlico County. Though no one won the big prizes of $25,000 for a hole-in-one or $10,000 for sinking a 60 foot putt, over $2,000 in donated prizes were awarded to participants."
Steve Donohue won a beautiful wedge for sinking two putts in the qualifying for the 60 foot putt contest. Johnnie Pippin and Julie Defino were closest to the pin winners. The longest drive winners were C. H. Styron and Suzy Alitto.
Winners of the prestigious Arlington Cup, the grand prize of the tournament, were Jim and Louise Murphy, Gary Harrison, and Dan Sanchez. The tournament was a captain's choice Super Ball. Arlington Place, an upscale development of homes near Arapahoe on the Neuse River is the lead sponsor for the tournament. The Sun Journal, for two consecutive years, was a Gold Sponsor.
Venturi noted, "While these people were really having such a good time on the golf course, they were also making a major contribution to the lives of students at Pamlico Community College. Student aid provided by the foundation in so many cases determines whether a student is able to stay enrolled. Students at PCC and other community colleges do not always fit the traditional molds of college students. They often have families and jobs and it can be a stretch for them to go to college and meet all their responsibilities."
Golfers were greeted at tee-off time by Dr. Marion Altman, PCC president, Venturi, and State Representative Alice Underhill. Underhill offered her thanks to all who were helping students and to Arlington Place for it's leadership role in sponsoring the tournament.
