What is a QEP?

QEP stands for Quality Enhancement Plan. The QEP is a required initiative that outlines a new, long-term program chosen by a college to enhance learning for its students. A QEP is designed to complement a college’s existing programs to improve the college’s learning environment, strengthen student learning outcomes, and support the mission of the institution.

The QEP is a required part of re-accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the body that accredits PCC. Without SACS accreditation, your PCC degree would not be as valuable to you or as recognized by future employers and graduate programs.

PCC’s QEP is a five-year plan to improve the learning environment and increase student learning focusing efforts on a First Year Experience program. The name of the program is Focus on Success (FOS).

Why a First Year Experience Program?

The First Year Experience of college students was commonly identified through analysis of data solicited from faculty, staff, students, and the general public as an area to concentrate efforts to enhance successful student outcomes. Focus on Success has been adopted as the theme for PCC’s First Year Experience efforts.

What is the purpose of “Focus on Success”?

The purpose of “Focus on Success” is to improve student academic success and persistence through the creation of a First Year Program. “Focus on Success” will focus on three goals that are directly related to three components contained in the First Year Program:

  • Connect and engage students to academic resources and programs
    • Provide first year students with an orientation program.
    • Develop an online orientation for distance learners.
  • Engage students in planning and integrating career and educational goals
    • Create a developmental advising model.
    • Professional development for academic advisors.
    • Create an academic advisor handbook (later this idea transformed into the academic advisor Moodle site).
  • Provide students with skills to effectively function in the college environment
    • Enhance ACA-111, College Student Success and ACA 122, College Transfer Success.
    • Create uniform syllabi for both ACA 111 and 122.
    • Appoint faculty member as an ACA Liaison.
    • Create common assessment tools.
    • First semester placement.
    • Offer day, night, face to face and online sections.

Who are “Focus on Success” students?

The “Focus on Success” program will be for the first year student. The first year student is described as incoming freshmen:

  • 1. Who have never attended college
  • 2. Who are returning to college after a five-year absence
  • 3. Who have less than 12 college credit hours
